Build a precision rifle on a winchester m70

Thought I would share a gun that I’ve put together. The original was a 243win. Started out with changing the barrel, after the precision was lost(maybe the barrel was done), anyhow I got my hands on a Sako 243 barrel, that was changed into a 6mm Norma BR. After that I bought a cheap secondhand Boyds thumbhole stock, which is now plastic bedded. Added a steel rail, a supressor (a-tec with two baffels) and bought a Meopta Optika6 4,5-27x50. And an oppertunity came along and I got the gun cerakoted very cheap. Now its 90% done, didn’t really fancy the Boyds Thumbhole(the stock is Nice enough, just Don’t like the pistol grip), so now I’ve started building my own stock, based on the old wooden stock, which was in pretty bad shape. Total cost so far incl. Original gun, scope and everything else, comes down to about a grand. So a fairly cheap setup, that shorts very well with the 90 grains Lapua Scenar L that I use for winter bird stalking(toppjakt in Swedish, check it out on Youtube, if you want to see how we Do that type of hunting). And the feeding of the ammo is so good in these old M70, feeds way better than my old Sauer 200 in 6mm Norma BR.

A few pictures of the stock I’m trying to build.
The added wood, was some left overs from a sauna build 😂

The Win 70’s are sometimes forgotten for their abilities as a lightweight and accurate rifle providing their built right

Hi

Interesting 're-purpose' project indeed, thank you for sharing and keep us updated as progresses!

I've actually always liked the M70's . Most here prefer the pre-64 versions , I've had a few , nice rifles , but I actually liked the later push feed models . I built a 338/06 on one a number of years ago . It was a totally reliable and accurate rifle . The early post 64 rifles were a bit nasty , but the later ones were well made . Nice rifle Lars .

Strange how tastes change in regions across the world

One man’s poison and all that
For sure. The riflemans rifle in the US. In Sweden its either a Carl Gustaf or a Husqvarna, and so on. The good thing is that one can find solid guns at a fair price.

My first 30-06 was a Model 70
Type 1 receiver, clip slotted, Lyman aperture sights & gold dot front bead - 5 digit serial no,. 2nd year of production, Super Grade

I'm looking to add a heavy Douglas Barrel & my Unertl scope to it in the near future

Second year of production, when would that be from then?
It sounds like you’ve been happy with it!

The pre-war model 70's are very nice rifles . A good friend of mine , and a member on here , has one that's been re-barrelled in 35 Whelen . I have first refusal if he ever , doubtful , sells it . Yours is a classic .

I'd be hard pressed to choose between them . All three have a large and faithful following out here . The pre-64 Winchesters are getting collectable and , therefore , pricey . Saddlers rifle would sell for north of $ 1500 around here if it's in close to decent shape . The Huskies and the CG's are priced a little more reasonably , but they still sell for as much as a decent , newly manufactured rifle . They are still very much in demand . One in good shape doesn't last long on the used market . I rebedded a Husky in 30/06 for a hunting partner last fall . It was in 90% condition , but the stock had dried out a bit , a common problem out here because of our low humidity . He paid around $ 900 for it . It keeps three shots inside an inch over about 20 groups , good enough for me . It makes me wonder how it shot when it was new , over 45 years ago lol .

They are all, like you say, great guns. Got two mid 80’s m70. One original in 308 win that my dad use when visiting. And then the 6br project. Also got a husky 1640 in 30-06, original but with a new blueing. They all work flawless and can shoot sub moa with most types of ammo. The 1640 my father in law bought brand new in the late 60’s, if I remember correct.
