NG,

I see new doubles up at Reeve's (Heym's), B/A's in Gibbs/and the odd Rigby now and again so l know what they are worth! So i bet your insurer's rub their hands when you hand over your premium!

It always makes me smile when l hear people whilst looking at them (usually there are no price tags on them) and then they start saying ' l dont like the stock - perhaps we can upgrade that' when they hear the guns price they say 'well the stock isn't that bad, - how much did you say the CZ was?)!!

Aye they may be worth a few quid, but i will still gladly let people have a go with them down at the range, only please dont drop em after the recoil !

One of the many aspects of double rifles i like is that they have a huge amount of hand crafting on them, its almost like a form of art. Each one normally has a story to tell, one of mine was owned by E.N.Buxton.

Oh and i was once about to be charged by a Roe Buck, so i shot it in self defense, the guy who i was staying with told me that in 300 years of history no one has ever heard of someone being mauled by a Roe Buck, my reply "Well i didnt want to be the first!"

Not exactly a cape buff

Mauled by a Roebuck ?
Yes , two local Policemen on motorbikes [ one a learner ] were passing through my lease-hold on the main road when a Buck popped over a fence and unseated one of them.
It was winded but not seriously hurt , when they dragged it onto the grass verge it bit one of them on the hand and he turned up at the local hospital .
The buck wobbled off a bit shaken without medical attention !

HWH.

Was lent an old Holland and Holland double in 7x64 (guess rebarrelled/sleeved) in Belgium last Nov for boar.

It had open sights and I got two shots off at fairly long range boar but clean missed. Lovely bit of kit and well balanced but guess it would take a bit of practice to use it effectively with open sights.

Privilege to use it though. Have since shelled out for R93 in 30-06 but have yet to christen it.

Damm! In my collection its 6.5x53R Dutch Mannlicher aka .256 Mannlicher.....sorry forgot that one had two names. ;)

Chris

That's OK we will let you off over your M95 Mannlicher (Dutch) which is really a model 1893 mannlicher. Oh don't forget that to add to the confusion the 6.5x54MS was also known in the UK at least as the .256 Mannlicher. I have one listed on my FAC as such after the plods complained about too many 6.5mm's as at that time I had two chambered in 6.5x55. Of course they are slightly happier about that now after I sold one before Christmas. Oh you might enjoy this:-

I believe that the box of Schoenauer ammo thta's in storage is marked .256" will have to check sometime.

Yep, .256 Gibbs Magnum, .256 Newton or .256 Winchester Magnum!

Chris

You have a 256 Winchester Magnum?? What in? One of my favorites.~Muir

I have a double rifle but it's a 58 caliber front loader.... Doesn't quite fit the genre being discussed, does it? ;)

Double Rifles - I think most rifleman fall into two categories - those that have double rifles, and those that would really like one (self included), albeit many in this latter category may not be prepared to admit it.

A fine double is handbuilt and even modern machine age doubles still require a lot of hand finishing - and most in the past had relatively plain straight grained wood, not because the builders were cheap skates, but because straight grained wood is the strongest available and last forever. A double may indeed be the cheapest shotgun available - buy a good one, look after it and sell it in a few years for considerably more than you bought it for, and have fun with it the meantime.
