Firearms medical

This is blatantly obvious your GP wants not to be associated with any direct decisions being taken regards any individuals’ (not specifically yours alone) firearm application. for reasons unknown, but I would guess is done so to distance themselves from any potential corporate Culpability / legal accountability in the future, should their actions/ judgment be called into question.

The stupid thing about Medcert route is that the GP surgery still has to copy your records and send them across to Medcert and the GP doesn’t get paid for doing this. In other words by chsrging £220 the GP surgery still does similar level of work and gets nowt.
My GP wanted £90, so I wrote back and said if they'd do it for £60 (The independent contractor's fee) I'd be glad to pay them, and as they'd have to pull the notes in any case that wasn't a bad bargain. They replied that they thought the service was worth £90 and they'd not do it for less - so they didn't get the job.

My GP refuses point blank to do it for my renewal.

I note on the GP Proforma one of the questions is if a 'flag' has been put on my record for having applied for a firearms certificate. If someone like medcert does it - how does this get added? I presume they would have to say 'no' unless perhaps when medcert requests the information - they surgery set the flag then and there.

Also - I read that the proformas should be less than 6 months old - buy my licensing team say renewals are taking 9 months!

Anyone had issue with any of these?

Provided the date on the medical proforma is within 6 months of the date that you submit your renewal, you will be fine.

The flag is not mandatory as the GPs refused to agree to basically anything to help this process

Although medcert set it up legally speaking you are requesting the documents for yourself and can do what you like with them

Your GP may or may not put a flag at that point I guess

And yes I now know of 2 people who had to request replacement medical proforma once the police had finally got to their application

My own medical is now a year old and the met haven't got to me yet.

Better to pay your GP's asking price as distinct from submitting to a Home Office approved/retained Medical Assessor that I suspect is where this is heading.

What would happen if every GP/GP Practice refused to engage with this process?

Im sure the marker on your medical records is mandatory. Well is Scotland anyway but that’s the practice Maneger that can add that on to your records that’s what happens with mine I had my proforma with shoot cert and my Feo called my practice to make sure they had put the marker on my records before he could submit my application

Yeap thats how it worked with mine (Scotland also)

My GP will not do it for any amount of money.

Ours have put their fee up to £50 and receptionist seemed apologetic on the phone and explained it’s cause they have to review a bigger set of notes so process time is now 1month.

Feel lucky with that reading what some of you have to do.

Process time used to be 28 days, its now a month.
The pro format is literally 3 or 3 coidesde of A4.

Yes our blackmail fee is £220 (which simply drives you elsewhere and the GO still has the work of forwarding your records and putting a marker on)

£94 fee and took 2 days. My GP surgery and GP are very good, but then I am in a semi-rural area so they probably get quite a few requests. They list it on a poster in the surgery as “Letters to police for sports equipment - £94” hahaha

Are you sure you put the closing quote mark in the right place? Shouldn't it be after the hahaha?
They're laughing all the way to the bank!
Should be a standard fee for this, across the board.
And it should be a lot less than £94.

Mostly agree with what your saying but I would pay £94 to get my profoma done in 2 days my my own gp happily and I would assume most people would

These forms ought to be completed for £5 with an AI same day and the GPs ought to be made legally subject to a requirement to inform the police of relevant concerns. Problem solved.

When this was first introduced, we (certificate holders) were told that it was likely to cost in the region of £50+vat, yet you're assuming that most people would happily pay more than that?
I guess I'm not "most people " then!
I would definitely not be a happy bunny if my GP were to up the price unreasonably.

I am using Med Cert now' £60 +VAT. Will update when I receive a reply, My coterminous expires 25 May 2026. New application forms I think ? Have to wait and see or start looking on line for my Constabulary advice or ask at the Shooting Show in February!

BC.
