Muntjac Deer Distribution

General feedback from my circle of Stalking contacts in The Cotswolds (Gloucestershire) is:
'There is more and more deer everywhere, and they are getting more and more difficult to cull in any numbers' - in particular Fallow.
Re Muntjac, in the last few months there are multiple reports of how many Muntjac are suddenly seen, including in places that have seen years of very hard culling on a 'Cull every deer of every species and both sexes that is Legal to cull and safe to shoot" basis.

We have the albeit not in huge numbers just over the old Severn bridge in Monmouthshire. I haven’t shot one yet but other syndicate members have.

Hello,

I'm curious about where in Southern England Muntjac are most densely populated. I know they seem to be prolific in the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge area. Are they as densely
populated in the west of the country? Oxfordshire/Wiltshire/ Gloucestershire etc?

Best,
Tom
Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire - need I go on?
They have spread pretty much everywhere
Go to the BDS site and look at the distribution map and you will see it is very widespread.

I would be very interested to see something more up to date.

My pet theory is that lock down and associated reduction in traffic etc gave all deer a breeding and migration boost, but in particular roe and munties.
Apparently the lock-down cull rate was just 30% of what it should normally be so rather then the total pop being reduced by 30% it was only 10% and that covered two seasons. So you can imagine that deer populations have grown and for territorial deer this means spread.

As you say Koenig not in any great numbers but spread throughout the county and into adjoining counties. They've been around for years but I've always wondered why we haven't seen any great numbers of them as most stalkers say if you manage to see one then it's already too late and there are hundreds of the little blighters?
Perhaps the majority are concentrated on certain areas as I know of one chap just outside Monmouth who advertises muntjac stalking so presumably there must be a decent concentration in his particular locality.

Not so long back I saw a muntjac buck dead alongside the A40 between the Wye bridge and the Gibraltar tunnels in Monmouth, there was also a case of a muntie stuck in railings in the centre of Chepstow.

There seem to be a large number of intermittent sightings of Muntjac over a very wide area of SE Wales and the border country.
