Not the usual calibre debate.......this time it is 7x64 or .280 Rem

Picked up a new 6mm BRA at the weekend and discussed both options with the smith. Done a bit of reading (on here and elsewhere), and thinking and starting to favour the 280AI.

The Brenneke was a draw based a fair bit on its history and decent ballistics for a 100+ year old cartridge. Plus it is bit left field, and the availability of ammunition in Europe. Still, more of a heart over head choice. Head would be to consider one of the modern 7mm derivatives.......

Going to keep pondering.

The 280 AI is a very good long range cartridge, and brilliant in long barrelled long range rifle. The squared off shoulders and blown out case give plenty of powder volume and an efficient case.

But, like any squarish shouldered cartridge, feeding from a magazine can be problematic. Not really an issue in a long range rifle where there is plenty of time.

The 7x64 has sloping shoulders and tapered case. It feeds very well so is an ideal hunting cartridge, especially where you want quick reloads etc. Its ideal for an all round stalking, plains game and driven hunt type rifle where such things can be important.

I would have one of each.

FEO says no to a new calibre.........only entertaining a variation. Seems Ive run out of good reasons for field calibres......

My 6.5x55 mag for the Sauer takes 7x64 and .270 so likely to work with .280 too.....but could be a costly mistake if i needed to get a Sauer mag tweaked too to run the Ackley......

Hiya pal, I use a 280, shot everything from reds down to muntjac with it, absolutely cracking round, I don’t reload but have a good supply of Remington accutip 140g which seem to do the trick out to 350 yards, could probably count on one hand the amount of deer that have run farther than 10 yards, hope this helps
Regards Ben
