3-12 X 56 or similar all the time, larger objective lens means more light in low light conditions, you will shoot more with one this size.

It is not quite as straight forward as saying the bigger objective lens allows more light to pass through as the magnification also plays a part on the light received.
The following article explains it quite well. In theory a 6x42 scope actually allows the same light to transmit to the eye as an 8x56 if you follow this theory. However, by increasing the magnification within reason, the object being viewed in the image is closer so may 'appear' more visible.

One other point I meant to make...
Hi magnification scopes are handy for taking longer than normal shots. I personally would only be taking them when the light is good so I can see the target clearly. Is there a need therefore for a high mag scope coupled with a large objective lens??????![]()

Hi Munty,
Can you explain how" you will shoot more with one this size" given that the exit pupil size of most adults, at best, is around 7mm. Please feel free to enlighten me.
Cheers,
Fatty.
Possibly because the target seems to be larger and at 12 magnification the exit pupil diameter is around 4.66 mm well within the capabilities of the average eyeball which only dilates to 7mm or thereabouts under extreme light conditions.
A target which can be seen as larger and therefore more clearly is obviously going to get you more deer and cause fewer worries.

anything above x42 is just extra weight and raises your line of sight and in turn diminishes your shooting due to poor cheek weld. anything within normal ethical shot distance can be taken with a 6x which is also good for woodland stalking.......getit![]()
