Virtus Precision Copper Bullets

Too Deer

Morning all,

A few weeks back, there was a chap who introduced a Virtus Precision on here but subsequently had difficulty registering as a trade member. Unfortunately, there were a number of responses to the thread that were fairly discouraging and focused on highlighting spelling mistakes rather than encouraging the originator to get signed up, paid up, and start distributing their wares.

Anyway, I bumped into one of the guys behind the company that same week and got talking. As it turns out, attention to detail is something that he is most definitely not short of. The projectiles they produce are founded upon decades of shooting experience under more varied conditions than you can imagine, and using one of the broadest datasets you are likely to find anywhere in the industry! Shooting is his thing, Social Media is not..... Hence the shaky 1st post.

So having bent his ear for a good hour, I told him to put his money where his mouth is and let me have a go with some of his stuff before I bought any. He gave me 10 x 6.5 projectiles at 110gr and I scuttled off to the loading shed to knock up some ammo to about 2800fps

Fast forward a week and I'm out looking for Muntjac. I came across 2 that evening and shot both with the Merlin projectiles supplied.
Both deer dropped on the spot instantly. Even using traditional lead bullets, some of which expand quite violently at the speed/range in question here (80-100 yards), I rarely get quite such instant results.

I'm told that the Merlins will expand down to 1500 fps thus are well suited to longer range shooting or milder loads at short range, and based on the accuracy and expansion I can absolutely believe it. They make other, less frangible stuff too but the guy had none on him that day. Anyway, enough of my ramblings, take a look at the photos below.

Anyway, in light of the recent difficulty in getting hold of bullets of all flavours, I just thought I'd let you all know that there's a UK-based option worth trying. Consider this a bit of a plug on behalf of a genuinely nice guy but believe me, if the bullets were shite I wouldn't bother!

If you're interested in finding out more, or getting your hands on some of their bullets, I can steer you in the right direction until the website is up and running.

That's the kind of expansion performance that is lacking in alot of lead free stuff..... looks ideal!!... let's hope he gets up and running soon (not the muntjac obviously).....

Can you advise whether the second shot deer was hit in the spine too, as there looks like there may be some bone fragments within the blood puddle to the right of the last picture shown, or could you indicate with some marker on the photo showing the inner cavities where the bullet has entered and exited? I’m not doubting the efficacy of the rounds, but for a monolithic bullet they seem to have made quite an ’impact’ where they left both deer. This suggests to me that they did not leave the party alone or with just a few drops of blood followin.

That is due a lot with the deer being shot on an angle which with them is mostly the case....

3 trips out all neck shots from a .270 150gn head. 2730 fps :tiphat:

If you want less damage shoot them in the neck.

The second one (out of velvet) wasn't hit in the spine at all. Having allowed for the difference in POI on the second deer, it passed through just above the heart.

The bullets in question are designed in such a way that the tip splits into 3, hence the level of expansion.

Looks interesting! Brilliant to see another British option coming to market.
It will be interesting to see how people find these on the large deer species as well as the smallest ones, but I'm guessing it'll work well looking at that wound channel!

The smelling a grandma police have there place in a court of law when a mis- spelt word or sentence can reduce murder into man slaughter but so do the lesser spotted of us !
Is this not a shooters Forum for all walks of life ! It should not a reflect a school yard .

No idea what that ^^^^ statement is trying to say.

What the owners of SD are very clear on is that it costs money to run the site. And that traders need to pay trade membership to sell on SD. Virtus ignored a clear instruction in this regard. That has nowt to do with spelling anything.

I was under the impression he went actually selling anything .... he was just introducing himself and his "wares" and informing those that are interested that there is another sort of lead free ammo available..... there were no prices or details of where to buy..... only that they will be available..... so surely not actually trading in anything on here yet.....
I could be wrong though....
