The solid copper forum.

308 130 using Fox reloading data, very accurate kills cleanly, what's not to like.

25/06 100 Barnes, perhaps the best bullet I have used.

375 270 Barnes, groups under an inch.

222 and 7x57 similar thoughts.

Barnes et al were developed as premium bullets after years of development with hot core/ H mantle etc etc.

Yes premium bullets cost more, but regardless of the legislation I doubt I will ever fire another lead bullet at a deer again, unless it's a muzzle loader.

Emulated Sako 270 110 TTSX load, albeit using RS52, worked fine on roe and red, although a knife required a couple times, but I'd put that down to the animal moving a tad as shot was taken.
Shifted to Yew Tree TLR, extremely easy to load develop, and to date only lost one animal, bizarrely one of three roe all shot at the same time at 160m from a super stable position.

I'll be needing to look into a suitable bullet for handloading in the 7mm-08, 1:8 twist, 22 inch barrel.
Accuracy is everything to me, with good terminal performance on fox, deer and occasional boar.

A mate tried some factory Sako copper bullets yesterday in his 243. Groups weren't too bad but he said the ricochets were worrying

Yew Tree are amazingly accurate and very effective.

I just need to slow mine down. 3400fps just blows things apart.

The side effects of that means its a close range bullet. You're talking once again like that's every lead free bullet known to man kind 😂
Never let facts get in the way of a good story though do you 😘
It’s not a side effect - the 338 Blackout is designed as a totally silent big game rifle for use at close range inside 100m.

But of course you would n’t get the joke.

Ricochets happen with any bullet if you shoot at a low angle into a hard surface. It’s not just copper bullets. I suspect your mate would have had the same ricochet with any other bullet.

It was where he always has zeroed and was also testing some new lead homeloads. But I've had zero experience of copper bullets yet.

Lathe Turned Solids are the way forwards, like it or not

Personally have used them for two decades now

One brand I used is no longer available which is a pity

A reloading subforum or page dedicated to LTS loading, discussion etc would be useful

It’s something we will be considering on the UKV site as it’s also likely this will have an effect for all forms of target shooting

Just in case anyone suggests LTS are not suitable for this - it’s the major bullet type for ELR shooting - so performance or external ballistics won’t be an issue with the correct bullet type or barrel twist rate

Sub forum - great idea

Hi Ronin,
Have you used them exclusively for those two decades?
If not, when and what for?
Thanks, Ken.

Been using Barnes TTSX exclusively for the last 7 years in my 20” barrels: 80gr in the .243 (Sako 75 shortened), 110gr in the .270 (Browning X-Bolt 22” and now Tikka T3X 20”) and 130 gr in .308 (Tikka T3X and Sako S20). I haven’t lost an animal yet in over 300 shot. I won’t be going back to lead.

I’ve tried most coppers bullets and the best I found was yew tree tlr in my 6.5x55 which have been one shot kills with reds to 350m and the same for roe to 440m obviously mostly shot between 70-250m. Great for gongs too.

No 1 in 3” is not standard. It’s a new development. By using a very fast twist they not only gain stability but you gain a huge amount of rational energy. The bullet is like a fly wheel and will just keep spinning and cutting its way through the animal. This additional spin energy more than makes up for traditional kinetic energy which simply takes into account Mass and the square of velocity.
What new pseudoscientific twaddle this week? "Rational energy" ...a new magical violation of the laws of physics where energy is magically created from nothing by a rotating solid. Christ Almighty!

Practically i have not shot the larger species of deer with lead for a few years , I do shoot a few Muntjac & CWD with lead . My normal deer loads with the .260 are 100 grain tTSX , 120 grain tTSX . Even for the Big Hill stags i favour the 100 grain It will break both shoulders at 300 yards no problem and exit far side
Sometimes i use tTSX 50 grain in the 223 or the Hornady eCX copper . Its not able to better the 60 grain lead nosler Partition but thats kind of misleading when its a fabulous killing bullet But it is a very top end deer killer and it uses a unique desighn over most std hunting bullets .
Ricochet is more common using copper Though we should not give the lead extra safety

Tempted to try hammer bullets as they seem close ish to GS custom.

I had decided to forget off the norm makes and just stick with Barnes ….

Here I am , eternal tinkering.
