30-06 or 308 or Creedmoor

One other thing I forgot to mention in favour of the .308 is it’s a very forgiving calibre in the shorter barrel. It will perform perfectly well out of a 20inch barrel so perfect with a moderator for woodland stalking or from a high seat. Both the 6.5CM and 30-06 get better results from longer barrels 24 inch for both of them.
This is worth a look

This is just a general discussion what would fellow members pick if they could chose the above or a different calibre all together?
For me it all depends on what you’re hunting and how available ammo is.

If I was hunting smaller deer in the UK I’d likely use Creedmoor, 243 or 308. 30-06 will do the job but I prefer less recoil if there are suitable alternatives.

I use a 300 win mag for most big game in Canada. For mountain hunting I use 6.5 PRC. Smaller game like deer and caribou I use 308.

So many suitable options, a lot of it comes down to preference.

faster powder but i have never heard this of a creed and the powder fill volume speaks differently 30-06 yeah needs a longer barrel as its more powder

They'll all work. How do you get on with recoil? The .30-06 will thump you a good bit harder than a Creedmoor. But then it thumps the quarry a good bit harder too at sensible stalking ranges.

My take on it - if you're shooting mainly big deer or there are boar involved, get a .30. If you're shooting mainly smaller deer and no boar, get a 6.5. .308 vs .30-06, well they both hit hard. The .30-06 only really starts to shine with bullet weights above what you need for UK quarry. It burns a good amount more powder than the other two and kicks harder.

Honestly for uk it probably makes zero difference. All popular calibres readily available ammo and all kill all uk deer species.
Some love .30 cal and talk lots of big hitting power guff some love the high bc long bullets of a 6.5. Positioned correctly they all do exactly the same thing on uk deer.
I find a 6.5 bullet gives good range and easier wind calls than 30 cal and actual overtakes my .308 in velocity when using my copper loads this means I can safely kill deer at a longer range than with the .308. But there’s lots of variables perhaps most importantly bullet construction that has a massive affect on all calibres. Pick one and enjoy!

As others have said - for UK deer in matters not. Its only once you get to bigger animals that bigger heavier bullets with more impact velocity start making a difference.

Indeed with monolithic expanding type copper bullets, you don’t lots of weight for deep penetration, however give the same design of bullet a .308 bullet is just bigger in diameter the .264 (6.5mm) and a bigger hole will always let blood out much quickly. And yes some may be ballistically more efficient etc etc, but game shooting ranges for 95% of occasions this matters not.

Far more important is to look at the type of rifle and optic combination that will suit the type of shots you will likely take. The good thing about the 6.5cm, 308 and 30-06 is that it does give a huge range of options both in terms of rifles as well as ammo.

Find a rifle and scope that fit and suit you and then look at what calibres are actually available- not what is listed on the interwebulator.

I have both 308 as well as 6.5CM. I do like both, but the 6.5 has slightly less recoil. Otherwise, no real difference.
In real terms, I don’t find much difference and like both calibres.
