I used to work a lot with European companies and venture capital investors. My qualifications and FCA authorisations allowed me to work from the North East corner of Finland, right down to Southern Greece and Spain. Partnership I was with had an office in Amsterdam as well as UK.
Like many professionals with just a UK passport I can now only go to Europe in a supervisory capacity or to talk about doing business. I am unable to work over there. I can get a work visa to work in individual countries, but each has very different requirements, and if you have a visa in one, it only allows you to work in that one country. If you want to work as a professional you need ti be qualified in that country, abd that usually requires taking exams in the language of the country concerned. Then given that I am of a certain age, any sponsoring employer needs to demonstrate there is not a younger local who do the job that I am being sponsored for. I have been through this with the Dutch authorities and it was a no to myself and other UK partners.
Part of my long term plan was to go and get a shack in the mountains and do odd jobs to subsidise my savings. Pretty much as other friends and colleagues have done. Only difference is that have an Irish or other EU passport.
If you are very wealthy you can get an investor visa in some countries.
I was born in Africa, and if I could get a passport from my country of birth, I would probably have a better chance. But not “being of indigenous nature” that route is not open either.
For those inward looking Brexiteers who have been beyond their county boundary and those who live more 20 miles are foreigners, Brexit has not had much effect. But for those of us who do work, travel and do business across Europe it has been an absolute disaster.
Yes we allegedly have a trading relationship with Australia and currently one of my portfolio is working with major Australian opportunities- but is bloody expensive to deal with and a visit is at least ten days and several thousand pounds, whereas most of Europe you can do a daytrip or an overnight to see clients or customers.
