Mandatory training will shut out stalkers when Scotland needs them most

Dan it does not matter what you think and i can assure you i have never been asked for my dsc2 and only once been asked to do a DMP on ground . I have put down facts evidence based. There has been talk of many deer in scotland buy a few on here and also about tickets for shooting. If you make money from your trade you need to do tickets unless you are from a eastern European country. What we are bidding on here is the ones who do not and might never shoot deer for profit. They still count. If i w3ant to lay a brick or put up a fence no one asks me to report everything to the housing association. Luca$ this is scotland and will not effect you. I suggest you get on with culling deer and then comment on what is and what is not necessary.

Heh you’re right, it just seems like a very similar situation I’ve dealt with within construction
 
Out of curiosity luca$ how did you get into deer stalking. Have you worked through the different shooting areas such as air rifles , shotguns, then rifles, or did you go straight into deer stalking. This is not a criticism honestly, just interested from your position why you took the course, was it to get the training experience or to open up shooting prospects now you have the certificate.

So I grew up in Sweden where hunting is a large part of the culture, my granddad would bring venison with for Christmas, I never paid any attention to the hunting aspect until a year or so ago where I started with a pcp air gun, then I got my shot gun cert and a shotgun, and now I’m working towards my fac, part of the reason for the dsc1 is that the feo recommended that I get it so I don’t get denied a larger calibre on my first ticket.

But eventually once the fac is sorted and I have more experience I’m hoping to get on basc’s “fit and competent” register where they have a database of people who can cull deer and can recommend me to people within my area
 
There would appear to be a timescale in mind for reducing deer numbers in Scotland judging by the ongoing discussions and mood music.

Though I have helped many through their training since 1985 and have a few relevant certificates, having taken over a thousand by my 25th birthday would tend to suggest that one
is able to find and deal with the ‘problem’ in the frame. I suppose there are two ways of going about it, one of them similar to looking a gift horse in the mouth, and when one may be pressed to deliver some sort of result.

It matters not personally whether one’s papers are recognised or not, any more than one’s ability to deliver on numbers, provided the clipboard users have a realistic understanding of who is the candidate most likely to deliver within their time frame. It may or may not take longer than they would ideally like, especially if they decide to eschew experience in favour of qualifications.

Reminiscent of an engineer I know who had found that those who had served learning time under an experienced hand were rather more useful to his firm than freshly qualified but inexperienced candidates. This being said, in this case it is after all the government of Scotland who are doing the deciding, so all bets are off for a sensible outcome in any event, that would set a hitherto unknown precedent.

If we don't self regulate don't be surprised if WJ get the politicians to enshrine something detrimental into law instead, but the we don't need no education type stalkers need to appreciate precisely why we do

You absolutely get people that are on top of the trade and are the top 1% in what they do with no papers to show that but how does anyone know their skill level if they haven’t even completed the most basic of qualifications?

Standards in the building trade for skilled work where you can actually see the result. E.g it's not hidden behind a wall, are worse than ever.

E.g. carpentry, brick laying etc.

there's also a massive problem with shortage of labour - more people are leaving than new ones coming through. I know loads of guys still working in their 60s and even some in their 70s.

I've met a trained chippy that had never cut a hinge in to a door with a chisel before. I had to show him.

Yeah the actual qualifications are really bad, I was talking to someone the other day and I could get a NVQ level 2 in carpentry in 3 weeks without ever touching a chisel, so that needs to change but again, I think there needs to be something in place to show employers that you’re at least semi skilled, I’m sure over the next 10 years l, training will become better, they seem to have carpentry, brickwork and electrical work in a good place as you can do them in college

Dad told me a tale of a labour who turned up with a brand new hod (long starf) new gauge shovel
He had the mixer up-right trying to load it! He asked him how much it cost him to get there on the bus?
2bob Dad gave him a 10 shilling note and sent him on his way.

I worked in London for some years.

Qualifications can be bought in pubs if you have the money.

I’ve seen people standing operating a traffic barrier one week and the next supervising tower crane lifting operations.

And they wonder why people get hurt.

Eh it’s not that bad but I see where you’re coming from, most sites will verify your qualifications through citb, but yeah you can speedrun the qualifications without knowing anything
