What vehicle do you use for stalking or management?

I am rapidly coming to think even the comfort levels and fuel consumption of the hilux would be heaven compared to the landy..... and theres 19% off for BASC members. Possibly even worth rejoining....
I got a better discount from my dealer direct than using the BASC discount on last 2 vehicles I bought.

BTW - be prepared to be disappointed with real world fuel consumption of pick ups. I used to get about 25mpg with my defender (Puma). Not a kick in the arse off that now with my DMax. Although I guess if you’re coming from a V8 Landy then the difference would be quite noticeable!!

What vehicles do you use-and what would you recommend in the second hand market (mad as it is )?
People seem to love jimnys, and double cabs abound. Any not to go for?

I have a defender 90, but I think Ill be parting with it.

There are some great responses here…and let’s be honest all choices are subject to personal preferences & experience

I have owned L200s (99 & 06), Navara (2012 & don’t believe the hype that LR are the worst for Rot fairy) , Honda CRVs (Cavernous space and surprisingly capable). I have had the use of Ford Rangers & Toyota HiLux…all been great in their own way and a bit of a let down in others…..but here’s the thing….

Which 4x4 can any average person that has access to a set of spanners maintain themselves?

Which 4x4 can you find off the shelf parts for that are cheap as chips across the globe?

How many 4x4s can you spend your hard earned cash on to see rather than their value drop like a bar of greased soap that they actually appreciate?

Which 4x4 really gets under your skin like no other?…..I think you know fella…

After 25yrs of ragging on my farmer friends about their rusty, ragged out, “RATTLESHIP” defenders whilst I rolled about in Japanese reliability with Bluetooth radio and an electrically warmed posterior….I am a Landy convert

Don’t sell your Defender you will regret it sooner or later….just buy it another one to keep it company (or for spares…you probably need them 😂)

Love it mate, two for one, so to speak.

I can imagine my missus standing on the deck, arms folded, glaring at me as I bring home a Landy PLUS it's "spares" mate so they can both stand on the driveway spilling their bowels into the drainage! I guarantee she'd slip me some rohypnol and tow the bloody things to the tip herself!

Good to see your still about Dodgy throwing into the SD mix…

To be fair…the ugly sisters are no longer together…and in truth I find the Defenders more reliable than folk would have you believe

I bought my 1st 200tdi April 2020 for £4750 K reg, 200k+, needed TLC but otherwise a good solid LR. It sold for £11k 10months later

I bought a couple more…the red one needed bodywork sorting but was the best chassis & bulkhead example I’ve come across…just 95k on a 1987 LR. I bought it for £6.5k sold for £8k after a good clean, service & using it whilst my own was having a crank seal replaced (It’s morphed into a new Bergara HMR 😉)

Old Green Frogeyes there…mechanically a great example of a 300tdi. Bought with more extras on it than a drive by at Halfords…full stainless de-cat exhaust, hybrid turbo & big intercooler. Solid original chassis & bulkhead…plan to sort the rusty doors & respray. It’ll be worth a small fortune as an export in a couple of years…

would this have been the same with a Jap truck?….I doubt it…

All depends on what you use your vehicle for. Does it have to do duty as a family vehicle too?

I've got a Discovery 4 (I know, I know). But I only want one car. Obviously excellent off road and a well decent motorway tool. It has 7 seats and a cavernous boot. But it's a compromise. Although it's proved reliable (not a given, of course) the space for your dogs and dead animals of any variety is open to the rest of the vehicle. And even if reliable, the running costs aren't cheap.
Another vote for Disco 4. They are great on road and cavernous it terms of storage, yes posts about reliability but get a good one and they are a good option

12 years old Freelander 2 as I mostly take roe/muntjac, it has to double as the family mass transport and I need to be able to cruise at motorway speeds without being deafened/frozen/having my fillings shaken out! I’ve found it’s off-road abilities quite impressive having had 90’s and RR previously :tiphat:

Thank god someone has spoken up for the FL2, I was afraid it was going to have to be me! I’ve had 30k miles of trouble-free civilised motoring from my 2013 HSE including regular rough tracks in Scotland, I’ve got no complaints with mine.

Ive got a 09 3.0l auto ranger and have owned it for about a year and a half with the only money being spent is on 2x sj's on the drive shaft and the pick up is super handy just to throw stuff into and sit out on when out with the nv after foxes, but its not as good as my old grand vitara off road and they both had bf goodrich AT tyres on

Perhaps OP was angling after some left field options?

I’ve run a couple of 3 door Land Cruisers for some 26 years. My latest was bought new in 2003, 233000 miles, no major issues aside from consumables and uprated suspension (not a lift, just less soggy dampers). The other car is an Audi Q5.
Any ideas welcome, but in absolutely no rush as I have 2 vehicles and unencumbered by young family considerations. Permissions are geographically split so a degree of mway/a-road comfort and room in the rear for a couple of fallow ideal. Reliable and likely japanese, but not essential. Ive even seen what looks like an ex-FC Ford truck with A Frame winch in situ but I think they probably get hammered ! Already had some great input here and PMs detailing gralloch and winch setups... all very gratefully received.

My jimny was a brilliant wee tool for going on the hill, put some off road tyres on it and away you go. They are gutsy on petrol though.

Totally agree, I have had three of these and had no problems at all.
If you look at the Australian videos on You Tube you will be amazed at where they can go.
Best of all you can now pick up an early one for 3.5K.

2019 HiLux Invincible X, I talked to probably 20 people before I bought, those that had a HiLux said 'get a HiLux' those that had another brand said 'get one of mine...or a HiLux.' It was between that an Isuzu or VW Amarok.

I do quite a few miles on the road and a few mates have the VW pick ups and say they are marginally better on the road than other makes but then others say they tend to fall apart a bit off road.

Get rid of the money sucker landrover she said so now i use her Kia Sportage

Id be interested seeing more of your ‘canopy’ setup in the rear if you would be willing to share?
Isuzu for me at the minute, I've had it 3 years an not had anything major fail.
However I've a Hilux extra cab been on order since March "should be here back of December" so the isuzu will be going, would have looked at a new one instead of the toyota but the discount wasn't as good.

Maybe a controversial opinion, but all Japanese pickups seem to have lost their way around about the late 2000's.

Newer models are heavier, have stupid features like 'bongs' when you leave the keys in, push to start, clutch needs to be depressed to start, lights always on, doors lock automatically, overhangs bigger etc. etc. All disadavantages for shooting.

Had to drive a new (2020) Hilux for work, hated it compared to mine from 2007.
