Best Calibre for Deer with Copper Bullets

What was interesting about the Barnes in 300WM?
I believe what he is referring to is a load pushing the 130 TTSX very quickly (3650 FPS in my load), I did a similar such test and it made a big mess on the Roe I shot, I have subsequently pulled those loads.

I have subsequently moved to a 150 TTSX and TSX (TTSX going 3342 FPS and TSX going 3124 FPS) which seems much more moderate on carcass damage, with a moderate entry and exit wound and massive catastrophic damage internally.

I am currently up in Scotland shooting hinds and will try to get an example up of what I am seeing later on, I completely forgot to take photos while on this mornings stalk, when I shot two calves.

Hope that helps,

Ben

Are you homeloading?

I'd be surprised if you can't get the CM shooting a different brand of 100gn at a decent velocity. I've got a 260rem running 95gn GS Custom bullets at 3150fps at the muzzle which is over 2500fps at 300yds.
Ditto, good results on everything up to and including bug Fallow bucks. GS Custom are very accurate in my rifles.

I like the look of them, not many rifles around though!
I know where’s there’s a nice second hand 7x57 heym for sale I’ve seen it what we would call a sleeper barely had any rounds thro it if I didn’t have one allready probably would have bought it myself

I’ve had all good results with .308 copper on reds (Sako Powerhead) and believe that the meat damage is less than with lead (albeit the lead was in .270).

I’ll hopefully be taking a CWD in a few weeks so interested to see the outcome. I’m hoping that as the copper retains more of its bullet weight meat damage from petals will be less despite the caliber on a smaller animal.

It will fall over

Dont see what all flapping about, shot 100’s and 100’s with copper no problem

Hi Ben, that does help thanks. I’d be interested in seeing some pictures whenever you get them.

I’m not in a rush to purchase, keen to do my homework and get it right, it’s expensive changing rifles in the UK!

I was going to look at GS custom next, I sent them an email last week.

I think that they're one of the best bullets but I don't think it's worth the hassle/delays/crazy prices anymore. I've got a reasonable stock of them but will switch to something easier to get once they run out.

Any reason you haven't tried the British 112gr Yewtree bullets?

I am researching a new calibre for my main deer rifle. I have a .303 SMLE which is great for woodland but I can’t make it accurate enough (for my personal standards), 6.5 CM which I bought and enjoyed using with 143gr ELD-X bullets.

I am now shifting to non-toxic and finding the 6.5CM lacking. It won’t shoot the 100gr accurately, the heavier pills shoot nicely but I’m struggling to get the speed on them. Ideally I’d like a terminal velocity of 2300-2400 at a max range of 300yards.

I am deep down a one rifle man, being that I reload I’d be happy to have different loads for species but I don’t really want different guns for deer.

I have been looking mainly at .270 vs .308 vs .30-06. Reading countless forum posts and magazine articles. I’d be keen to hear about peoples experiences with these calibres (and any others) used with copper. I’m not interested in lead performances, I’d like to get ahead of the ban and be ready for it.

The rifle will be used (at one time or another) with all 6 species.
.

Whatever happened to adequate - why does everything have to be BEST 🙄

FWIW now is not the time to be making a major investment in getting the BEST because we are at a time of great change. Today’s BEST will be tomorrow’s adequate and the day afterwards inadequate.

How will GD police copper - will they X ray?

Will their machines differentiate between lead, tin and copper fragments?

If not how many fragments will result in a carcass being condemned?

What bullet technology is around the corner?

Spending large amounts of money now is the equivalent to buying a rifle in 1999 and chopping it to 17” to use a 12” long Vaimeco moderator. The rifle becoming near useless when the much better T8 reflex comes onto market a year later.

Adequate and wait

As takbok said, I'd not bother. Getting them since Brexit is a PIA but I've got a very accurate load and decent stocks. I'll probably move to TTSX in 100gn when they run out. Or see what else is out there by then.

Adequate and wait

A lot to be said for this!! So much change ahead in this area that I'd definitely have a play with the TTSX or Fox at different seating depths. I'd say it's very unusual to not be able to get either to shoot well.
