Steel shot??

So in the interest of fairness I've tested Hull standard pressure steel and was not impressed but got dialled in for the last shots of the box.
I today bought a box of Fiochhi steel but on real plastic wads to which I am not happy about one bit!
I was also given some other steel cartridges.

Some of the loose ones are Fiochhi 35g and there is the flure de liaise thingy in the case.
I bought a box of 32g as well supposedly standard pressure but on the box it says this....

I get the choke thing but can these be shot through a " normal" barrel?

Don’t shoot cartridges marked with the fleur de lys unless you have the same proof mark on your barrels.

Steel shot without the fleur de lys is “standard” and can be shot through any barrel as long as you have no tighter than half choke on it.

Fleur de lys means it’s the high pressure stuff and you need a gun specifically proofed for that in order to shoot it.

When lead finally goes I'll use bismuth instead. There are just too many ifs and buts with steel and it's ballistically inferior to other alternatives. Quite apart from that there are question marks over the safety from ricochets and welfare implications concerning wounding instead of humane killing with steel.

My biggest concern is the last sentence on the last picture... "suitable for 2 3/4" chambers " what happens if you use them in 3" / 3 1/2 " ? Or is that standard wording on lead as well?

It may be the shot size pushes them into HP steel territory.

I would say they are faster than lead so your "I got dialled in" part was the adjustment
My 425 3" Browning in 8oz heavier than the 325 so handles different so I have to push it a bit more in the swing also the marsh shooting is not like a pigeon hide.

That's what I thought but will they by ok in a 3" gun without the Fleur thingy?

I'm in complete understanding and agreement.

I just want to know for myself what I'm up against!
And possibly save the lead for my muzzleloaders 😉🤫

What size shot are the Fiocchi?

Hull recommendation is to match chamber length to cartridge length when using steel shot, to reduce the risk of damaging the forcing cone.

This may help you.
Standard steel shot
HP steel shot

I have a 3" browning and a varied selection of steels shot cartridges from 70mm 32gm 5's Eco Wad to 36gm 76mm 1's
All kill duck/geese. When the teal/widgeon are dropping into the decoys then I use the 5's later in the flight and they up a bit higher then I will use 34-4/3's or 36-3's to 36-1's
The trick is not to poke at them as they are often further away than you think!
Hit any of them in the head they will fold, shoot them in the back end or break a wing then it is not like running over the stubble for a pigeon as the tide is coming.

I have no issue with their effectiveness, my concern is whether putting 70mm steel thru a BNP proofed (not hp proofed) 76mm chamber will lead to issues down the line. Currently I can't see any non HP 76mm steel for sale?

I put standard steel through my Aya 20 bore, no fd lys obviously, no problem either, but can you put HP steel through a 3" magnum barrel which has no fd Lys marks?
