The majority of violent crime in the UK is not committed with firearms.

Police officers are mostly unarmed, as are security guards, and most people in general.

A violent criminal can achieve their goals using knives, matches and other type of weapons.

This means that criminals do not feel compelled to use a firearm in a robbery or a mugging.

(and it also means that less legal firearms are stolen and find their way into the hands of criminals)

If someone is attacked at home by an axe wielding burglar, I am sure they'd love to have a firearm to hand, and at the individual level this makes sense.

However, at the community level, if more police officers, security guards, and private citizens arm themselves with firearms for self defense, then inevitably criminals will up their game to match and we will see many more violent crimes where a firearms was used by the perpetrators.

Not sure that it's true either. Police are routinely armed in the large majority of countries and they do not all have higher rates of violent crime than the UK. Perceptions tend to be misleading among those who think of the world as only consisting of the USA and UK, as is sonoften the case where law, guns, healthcare and driving are concerned.

BTW, I am a keen shooter and own several rifles, but it never occurred to me to try and use them for self defense. The rifles are either stored at an RFD, or locked away in my gin cabinet with the ammunition locked in a separate compartment and the keys hidden - there's no way I could easily reach for the gun if I spotted an intruder - a 999 call will be the best course of action in this case.

Even if they wish to use plastic / resin replicas, they need a real one for the initial cast.

Any real firearm can easily be converted so that it can only shoot blanks.

Potentially, but it would still be licenced as a firearm and able to inflict significant injury / kill. Either if something entered the barrel or a restrictor failed and became the missile itself.

.410 shot pistols are also an excellent tool for dispatch especially when conditioned for solid slugs which by the way produce way more muzzle energy than a .357mag/38 special.

If a sawn if is legit, like the one above, with good reason to have and ONLY EVER used for that good reason and otherwise “kept safe” then fair play. If not, LOCK HIM UP AND CHUCK THE KEYS!!! For the life of me, I cannot fathom how an industry that managed to recreate Dunkirk and D-Day on screen, is still dependent on the use of real guns in films. You'd have thought that if they managed to build a set to depict the sinking of the Titanic, they should be able to make imitation firearms for use on movie sets (and yes I'm referring to the Alec Baldwin incident).

Is the likes of John Wick not filmed using gas guns to gives the flash of the gun going off and the sound added later.

shoots good and surprisingly not as much kick as you think , I use it for shooting slugs at the range, standing you can put every shot in a 9" target at 25yard no problem

I suppose realism could be listed as the reason, look at every film where a .50 bmg is fired with the complete absence of recoil, ask any soldier the difference between doing a live fire attack, one involving blanks and one where you walk through. Its one more thing the actor has to convince the audience of, as I understand it, Ewan McGregor was berated by George Lucas for making light sabre sounds during his scenes, imagine if Keanu Reeves shouted bang everytime he pulled the trigger. But agree with the point of no live ammo on set
