Home office consultation on deregulating sound moderators

Done it could save pages of documentation when I renew in a few years. All weapons have moderators air rifle 22lrs and CFs

A bit late now but all those making comment the biggest issue is the work load it would remove from the overstretched firearms licensing departments enhancing efficiency and reducing costs.

Done

Even though I wonder if this is all cover for HMG in some way - the potential double/treble/multiple bluffs are confusing me about it all right now
As has been proven time & time again, "consultations" are usually a smoke & mirrors ploy in order to allow politicians to dodge the blame for something - and I suspect this one to be no different
I just haven't confidently identified the disappointment coming our way yet

I also expect the media, instead of going with the reduction in registered firearms line, to latch onto some crazy opinion pieces along the lines of -
"unregistered silencers, which allow shooters to fire their weapons completely silently & without detection are being handed out to gun nuts by the evil tories"
We know moderators don't work that way, but the typical politician & joe public don't

Sorry to be a despond but I'm too old & too jaded to trust politicians, the media or the general public

Yep, far too many people think that movies reflect reality
Including, or so it would seem, a former USA Presidential candidate H R Clinton who (ought to have) embarrassed herself by stating her ignorant opinions following the infamous mass shooting in Las Vegas.
However, again giving my cynicism free rein, I reckon she knew exactly what she was doing. She is clearly very well aware of just how ill-informed most of her voter base really are and was playing to the gallery by screeching loudly for unnecessary "gun control" measures. Her remarks kinda back up what I said about misconceptions relating to "silencers" though - she said something along the lines of "using one of these devices the shooter will still be shooting at you, but you won't be able to run to safety because you won't know where the shots are coming from"

Anyway, I responded to the consultation supporting the amendment to take moderators off FAC's
I just can't bring myself to believe that a duplicitous political community or an ignorant general public will allow such a change to legislation, no matter how sensible or overdue the change is

From this Statistics on firearm and shotgun certificates, England and Wales: April 2022 to March 2023
you'll find this "Of the 615,627 firearms covered by a firearm certificate in England and Wales as at 31 March 2023, the majority (57%) were rifles and 32% were sound moderators. These proportions have remained stable over the last 8 years.
These numbers are for England an Wales
I filed an FOI request to Police Scotland regarding the number of moderators held on certificates in Scotland and the relevant part of the response was this: "I can advise you that as at 5 June 2023 approximately 36% of current items on Firearms certificates are sound moderators"
Getting moderators off ticket is the easiest and biggest win any government could have in proclaiming that they have reduced the number of legally firearms in circulation

Cheers

Bruce
