Tonight BBC2 Venison & Deer Management

Just goes to show you, give the give the school kids a chance, and they soon roll their sleeves up and get stuck in :thumb:

Most game dealers this side of the wall most game dealers don't like the aches split as there is no requirement in a correctly designed cold room the carcass will not cool any quicker with the aches split.

Same here. As far as my dealer is concerned, the shorter the cut, the better.

Good representation of deer management, did anybody else think the shot shown may not have been the one that killed the roe? No follow through, just didnt look right to me??

Watched the programe by pure chance while channel hopping, thought it was a very well presented piece on our sport. The very first thing i thought when the shot was taken was 'Done for the camera'. If that was the kill shot then i think he was very lucky to get a kill, let aloan a clean one! As you say, it just did not look right........
The bit at the School was a particularly good piece with the parents giving thier suport and hopefully one in the eye for the antis! At last some telly that is worthly of the TV licence!

Have to agree Terry he was looking up over the barrel far too quickly for my liking . However he was out a couple of weeks ago with a friend who said he is a very nice chap and he can shoot so probably a 'camera' shot . A good advert for game as was Clarissa a few weeks ago. Glad to see the BBC spending my money on watchable programmes for a change.

It was a shame we had to sit through half an hour of Ainsley selling Mustard as a forgotten delight but I thought Valentine did us proud.

The bit with the kids in school is just the sort of initiative I would like to see going national.

Well done BBC2!

Really gutted now with all these favourable comments. Set the Sky+ to record this and we lose the satellite signal just as it comes on!!!!!

Hopefully be able to see it on BBC I player thingy...

Def agree that the shot shown was not the shot that killed the deer! Anyone else notice that the "nice roe buck" they shot turned into a doe when it was lying in the grass (obvious tush!) then turned back into a roe buck as they were carrying it out :-D Guess the production team had to go back to get some more footage and bucks had gone out of season??
That's just being picky though, but I was a bit disappointed that Mr Valentine got the roe seasons wrong - he basically stated (when cooking the venison salad) it was only available for half the year... Overall, very positive stuff though :thumb:

I watched it with my 10 year old twins.

Sarah, said – I love deer, they are so cuddly – and that taste delicious!

Edward said – Can I get paid for stalking deer, and how can I become a forest ranger.

Great prog all round!

In Mr Clunes' defence. He started off with words to the effect that he was a bit squeamish about the whole prospect but he is a meat eater so he was willing to give it a go. That'll do for me as an honest admission and good for him for even thinking of giving it a go. He actually seemed to do OK on the practice plate with the rifle. So, why it never went to a kill we can never know. It was certainly presented as though the paying gun he was out with fluffed the job and they ran out of time for getting Martin onto shot after that. It looked like a fair effort but no animals were evidently harmed during the making of that episode... I've had days like that too.... :D

The paying gun was me, although I didn't pay anything! The main issue was the fact that deer aren't going to hang about when there is a camera man, sound man, sound mans assistant, producer, Clunes, the ghillie and myself all trudging up the hill with everyone except me and the ghillie in blue, red, black jackets etc, most frustrating. Clunes wasn't in the slightest bit interested either to be honest, I would compare him to a well trained dog, he did as the producer asked and that was it, he didn't give a toss to be frank!

No decent chances presented themselves on the day, so, no shot.

Totally agree, lambs and even fat ewes are not split in the meat works, -less exposed flesh the better...

Very good prog....

just watched it on series link. thats the best one i have seen so far taking the talks into the shcools is the way to educate and they enjoyed the experience, abit squimish at first but they all got stuck in, keep up the good work, atb wayne

I am not being funny/picky but I don't understand reference to splitting the 'aches'
Unless it is refering to the 'H' bone, can someone enlighten me please.
Sorry for being thick, but I am a 'Somerset Southerner' ;)

Editing is a bit of blighter, isn't it? But, on the blank day side of things, did I not already say I've had days like that too? ... I'm sure we all have.

At least he came across as having the right intentions on camera. He did admit to being a carnivore and did say he thought it only right he should get to grips with the "killing it" side of things, even if he was not very enthusiastic about it... From my take of the programme, all we really saw of you was a fine shot at the plate then a dissappointed shake of the head when you came back over the hill, without any luck... the imputation being that you'd missed your chance... or do you feel I've stated the way you were presented unfairly somehow?

I think the key points are... Neither Martin Clunes personally nor the programme in general ran stalking down or implied in any way that deer management in a sporting context was a bad thing. In fact, quite the opposite. He stressed how financially important stalking and similar activities are to many estates. He did seem to be slightly non-plussed at the whole tweed and long socks experience... but ... all things considered... Not such a bad press. Actually, pretty good press for field sports, considering what you've now told us and I'm sure Amhuinnsuidhe castle wasn't painted in a bad light either... Are you saying you got all that good advertising without paying? :D

i watched it and was please with it, i am now inundated with mates wifes asking to try some.

be ok if i can get myself a chiller from somewhere,

bob.
