Carcase Quality

Is Billy Wyatt the one who runs giving up the game?
If so, guys a tit and needs a reality check.
Cannot disagree more strongly, he has put hundreds if not thousands of people in touch with each other and there are some really good game based businesses on there, I personally know a couple of stalkers who supply quality carcasses via the site as well. There are rogue stalkers stalkers everywhere, I recently got some pheasants dropped off which had been lying in a guys boot for five days, cold or not that is not how to look after game. Discretion needed about what you eat as always, don't shoot the messenger.

i rejoined last night, within two minutes, I found some very well presented fallow carcasses, and I commented on how good they looked, and everything else I saw on there deer wise, as far as I was concerned looked like roadkill in my opinion

Agreed! There is a “game dealer” on there who recently offered me decent money for carcasses but the stuff he presents on there looks like sh*te so I wouldn’t send anything his way.

That said, I’ve never had any problem moving surplus carcasses directly through Giving up the Game for decent money and everyone I’ve met has turned up on time, paid the right price and been spot on.

I thought the minimum was a video.

Although quite a few years ago now, I did mine at a location with a larder. Had one suspended and another on cradle.

Took lots of photos as you did then. Anyone doing DSC1 should really pick a place that has the correct facilities - Andy Papworth at Eridge Park or Jim or Malcolm at Deer Game and Vermin Management are people that Id trust to run a good course.
So very true. I did my DSC1 with Andy Papworth…top man. Cannot recommend him enough. We had a good demo with a deer that was shot that morning.I was a total novice and it set me on the right path. Clearly, it’s a start but Andy does set you up properly. He runs the DSC at Simpson Brothers (I highly recommend them)

By accepting that standard he's got the perfect excuse to set his prices to the lowest common denominator, and pay a much lower price across the board, even for well presented animals.
True...... I do not get a better price for carcasses that have all been either picked up where they fell via quad or only dragged a short distance over relatively clean woodland floor (no mud). I get a reasonable price compared to others but the price is likely across the board, even for those that will have done some "off-roading" before they ever see a cold room. Mine go into a cold room on-site, so again they will compare more than favourably to other suppliers but the common denominator is the average stalker with little or no facilities

As UK deer managers/stalkers, 'we' get the 'standards' that 'we' collectively accept. So, ask yourself this - do you accept incompetent and unsafe use of a firearm? No, you don't. Therefore, we as an industry shouldn't accept incompetent and unsafe carcass handling which may present a public health risk.

If a stalker/deer manager is incompetent then their Trained Hunter status should be revoked.

In my 23 years in this industry, I've never yet heard of anyone having their Trained Hunter revoked, which makes a complete mockery of 'voluntary' deer management qualification and our state food hygiene regulatory procedures. As a result, Game Dealers can play us off against each other and we collectively have only ourselves to blame.

With authority comes responsibility and every Trained Hunter has a role to play. If we want to sort this out then failings need to be identified and rectified. Well done to those who have undertaken to do this. The inexperienced need confidence, training and more experience. As for the rest of you so called 'Trained Hunters', stop winging about it and start doing something about it!

DMQ, FSA, local authorities, Trading Standards please feel free to comment ... hello, is anybody there?

I suppose that alot of these suspect carcases have been dropped in out of hours? Otherwise I would expect the owner of a chiller/ gamedealer to inspect what comes in as it could also affect the rest of the carcases hanging.

I agree, but from what I understand it is a 'qualification' and they cannot be revoked.

However, they could be blacklisted by the game dealer, it's only a matter of time before a member of the public gets seriously ill down to poor handling, I saw a deer that had cow sh!te on the fur that had clearly been dragged through it.

A truly lovely speech, i am in 100% agreement!

No winging here, but with the amount of replies on this thread, from the usual pro grate A carcass suspects, there must be a lot on the SD not giving a 💩

Here comes the BUT, stalkers are not regulated and if they were, they would just go on giving up game on FB and het shot of their crap on there to the 1000’s who know no different!

There is plenty already from what i have seen.

The 'awarding body' is the authority for the qualification and Trained Hunter status. Therefore, also has the authority to both audit and/or revoke the award.

However, I'll wager that DMQ has never had Trading Standards/FSA come knocking to review the training record and qualification of an incompetent Hunter.

I have no experience of 'giving up game on FB' (although, by your description it would appear that some 'hunters' need to take it literally). Regardless, if there are carcasses that present a potential risk to public health, or which are being advertised by incompetent/unqualified hunters then they need to be reported to the FSA and/or Trading Standards - sound use of UK tax. No ifs, no BUTs.

I would rather make it simpler , the Game Dealer is the one buying it so they should be more stringent in what is acceptable . Stalkers would also realise what was acceptable when there carcass was rejected . Also what is wrong with a Game Dealer saying to a supplier here is a video or pictures of what I expect , if it doesn’t meet these requirements please don’t take it to me . Last year I had small estate owner phone me and asked if it was possible to use my chiller to hang some Roe in until there so called visiting deer hunter was going home. He shot 3 - 1 had been shot up the arse with a 30-06 , 1 was saddled in 2 , the 3rd was a small buck that was well out of season . They looked as though he had gralloched them with a hatchet , they were covered in blood and hair and It was a total disgrace so I let the estate owner know on the phone what I thought , I then told him to come and take the buck away as he was breaking the law to which he replied “ no I’m not “ . He phoned me back and apologised and came and took them away after he checked . The so called Deer Hunter never raised an eyebrow and was proud of his work 🤷‍♂️travels up twice a year to do his “deer culling” as he calls it . Lack of knowledge and unwilling to learn , all he wanted to do was boast and go about looking like Rambo . 😁His wife even had camouflage nickers .

I think it's not just about the quality of the carcass itself but the environment the preparation is done. Sometimes I look at some ads on that fb page and see some nice clean carcasses offered for sale but looking at the disgusting garage, sheds and preparation area with clear signs of pests, I'm just surprised how people don't spot the lack of basic hygiene measures at all.

Still get people (including in a club I was in) saying ‘DSC1 can teach me nothing’ - possible but in reality far more likely not aware of best practice or even notifiable disease. Some people just dont want to learn.
